NOTICE OF INFORMATIONAL MEETING MAPLE RIVER LATERAL NO. 1 (DD NO. 6) MONONA COUNTY, IOWA To: ALL LANDOWNERS AND PERSONS WITH INTEREST IN MAPLE RIVER, LATERAL NO. 1 OF MONONA COUNTY, IOWA. The Board of Supervisors of Monona County, acting as Trustees for Maple River Lateral No. 1 Drainage District 6 (DD6) received a petition for repairs/information due to flooding on June 27, 2024. Acting on this petition, the Board appointed ISG of Storm Lake as Engineer and directed them to make a preliminary study and to report their preliminary findings to the Board. In review of the District’s facilities and with understanding of flood conditions resulting from the June 2024 flood event, additional information is needed from the landowners. After original establishment, Maple River Lateral No. 1 was improved in cooperation with the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) in the early 1950’s as part of the Little Sioux Flood Control Act of 1936, private landowners, and the Drainage District. These agreed improvements included the establishment of levees from the confluence with the Maple River to its crossing of 220th Street, improvements to 235th Street; several culverts, crossings, and erosion control structures. In addition, several grade stabilization structures and diversion ditches in the headwaters to control flows to the Drainage District were also constructed. All improvements were made as part of a global watershed “water disposal facility”. In order to responsibly act on the petition, the Board of Supervisors as Trustees wish to discuss the current use and maintenance of the aforementioned 1950’s improvements to determine scope of future improvements and/or repairs. The Board would also like to obtain an understanding of the current condition of grade control structures in the head waters. THEREFORE, YOU ARE HEREBY NOTIFIED that the Board of Supervisors for Monona County, Iowa, acting as Trustees for Maple River Lateral No. 1, has set Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., in Supervisors Room of the Monona County Courthouse, 610 Iowa Ave, Onawa, Iowa, as the time, place and date for an informal meeting to discuss the current use of the facility and petition for repairs. This is not a formal public hearing and the Board will not be taking any official action other than to receive input from the landowners of the District. Therefore, please take notice and plan to attend. If you are unable to attend, you are highly encouraged to submit comments or input in writing to the Monona County Auditor prior to the meeting.
