Joshua Langholdt was recognized on October 5 after winning the 2026 USBC Open Championship Standard All-Events title. He posted a nine-game total of 2,028 at the national tournament in Reno, Nevada, setting a Standard Division record.
The Iowa State UBSC presented Langholdt with his championship trophy at Lucky Lanes XII in Denison.
Langholdt started bowling when he was in fourth grade in the youth league in Denison.
“Bowling as always kind of been a sport our family did,” Langholdt said. “My grandpa’s brother actually owned the bowling alley in Ricketts, both of my grandparents bowled when I was younger.”
He usually bowls once a week during Monday night Men’s League, and him and his girlfriend, Cindy Blumhardt, sometimes sub on Friday night for Mixed Couples League.
Occasionally, Langholdt will go to tournaments with some friends from the bowl league or with some friends that he met when he lived in Nebraska.
For the last 15 consecutive years, Langholdt has taken part in the USCB Open Championships in Reno, Nevada.
He explained, National Bowling Tournament isn’t something you have to qualify for; it is a open tournament that anyone with a sanctioned average can bowl in.
The USCB Open Championships started on March 1 and went until July 28.
Langholdt went and bowled posting his scores on May 7th and 8th. He posted a nine-game total of 2,028 at the national tournament in Reno, setting a Standard Division record.
“I had from then until July 28th watching scores that other people posted hoping that no one would beat mine,” he said. “I can’t even begin to explain what it felt like to see my name a top of the leader board after we got done for the first time in 15 years, and then the nerves of watching scores every day until the tournament concluded.”
He still doesn’t know if it has sunk in that he won as there were roughly 23,000 bowlers in his division that he beat.
During the day, Langholdt is the District Conservationist for the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service in Ida Grove. He grew up in Denison, graduating in 2007, and went on to Iowa State where he graduated with degree in Ag Systems Technology with and emphasis in Bio Systems Management. He spent a couple years after college in Aurora, Nebraska working for NRCS before moving back to Iowa
Langholdt and Cindy and their 19-month old son, Max, live on the Langholdt family farm where his grandpa, and dad grew up a couple miles northwest of Ricketts (directly in the middle of Schleswig and Mapleton) where they also have some cows and farm a few acres.
He said Cindy is just starting to get into bowling and he hopes to get Max into bowling.
“He currently just has a play set in the living room,” he said.
